About Tulip Bulbs
Tulips are a variety of flowers that bloom in early spring. Their flowers are typically brightly coloured, large, and cup-shaped. Tulips are perfect for a range of garden tasks. You can plant tulips around the perimeter of your lawn to create a clean border. Equally, you can plant your tulip bulbs in plant pots.
As of today, 75 varieties of tulips have been discovered and cultivated. There’s a vast array of tulip varieties. Popular colours include red, white, pink, orange, and apricot! At Oxy-Plants, we have brought you the best and boldest tulip bulbs! We offer:
- Tulip Pamplona (Red) – the tulip pamplona is the boldest tulip of them all! This variety has a dainty green stem and a bold red flower. It will bloom with an open cup and bask in a sunny spot all-day long!
- Tulip Purissima (White) – when fully bloomed, these tulip bulbs will produce an innocent white flower. They have a dainty closed cup and complement the neutral greens, browns, and blacks of a typical garden.
- Tulip Aveyron (Pink) – this variety produces delicate pink flowers. Each flower blooms with a wide cup shape, displaying ornate pink petals throughout Spring and Summer.
Tulip Bulbs are Early Flowering
For optimal growth, plant your tulip bulbs in your garden between August and December. From here, your flower bulbs will be fully grown by the middle of Spring and continue living into the Summer months. When your tulip bulbs are fully grown, you can cut flowers to produce ornate bouquets for a friend, family member, or loved one!
Where Should I Plant My Tulip Bulbs?
Tulips are a versatile flower that can be used for a variety of garden tasks and jobs. They work well in flower beds, along pathways, or in plant pots/containers. They can also provide a burst of colour at the front of borders or alongside spring-blooming shrubs.
For a dramatic effect, you should consider planting tulips among other early spring bloomers like daffodils or hyacinths. This can create a stunning display as different flowers come into bloom. Tulips help deliver that much-needed burst of colour into your garden decor.
Tulips can help attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies to your garden, enhancing its overall ecosystem. They’re also useful for brightening up areas that are otherwise dull in early spring, providing colour and visual interest.
How to Plant Tulip Bulbs
Planting tulip bulbs is a delightful way to bring vibrant colour to your garden. Start by choosing a sunny spot that gets plenty of sunlight and has well-draining soil. Place your tulip bulbs in a spot with full sun to ensure optimal growth. Keep bulbs away from hedges and trees as this can limit the amount of sunlight they receive.
Tulips prefer a spot that’s not too wet, so if your soil tends to be soggy, consider amending it with sand or planting the bulbs in raised beds. You can also mix in vermiculite, perlite, or potting sand into your soil to improve soil structure and drainage.
Prepare the soil by loosening it to a depth of about six to eight inches. Remove any weeds or debris and mix in some compost to enrich the soil. This will help your tulip bulbs establish strong roots and thrive when they bloom.
When you’re ready to plant, position the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards. Space them a few inches apart to give them room to grow. The depth at which you plant them should be about two to three times the height of the bulb. For instance, if your bulbs are about three inches tall, plant them six to nine inches deep.
After planting, cover the bulbs with soil and gently tamp it down to remove air pockets. Water the area well to help settle the soil around the bulbs. If you live in a region with harsh winters, applying a layer of mulch on top can help insulate the bulbs and protect them from extreme temperatures.
As the growing season progresses, you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful blooms that emerge in the spring. Tulips often need little care beyond regular watering and occasional feeding. If you want them to come back year after year, allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, as this helps the bulbs store energy for the next season.
