How To Care For ZZ Plant
Only water when the soil has completely dried out. This plant can do without water for months (in the right spot). If you notice a weakened grey stem, yellowing leaves and dry, crispy patches on the leaf edges then the plant is under-watered or in a too spot that is too bright (if you are watering).
You can put this plant in almost any spot in the house. Just don’t place it in a cold, drafty spot or an area with too much direct sunlight.
Hailing from Africa, Zamioculcas is fine with low humidity. Just wipe the leaves with a damp cloth from time to time to remove any dust or potential pests and avoid over-misting – or for a simpler solution pop in the shower and rinse down.
This plant likes well-draining soil. You can add extra perlite, wood chippings or coco coir to the potting medium to allow for extra drainage.
You can use houseplant fertiliser at half strength or cactus feed once a month, but it shouldn’t need too much. You’re always better to underfeed rather than overfeed.
If using fertiliser is new to you, read our “How to Fertilise Your Houseplant” page!
Not prone to pests, but keep an eye out for the common house pests such as mealy bugs, scale, aphids, spider mites and fungus gnats. You can apply neem oil every 2 or 3 weeks too, for general house plant maintenance.
If you think your plant is suffering from a pest or disease, take a look at our Pests and Diseases page!
ZZ Plant is easy to propagate by means of division or by taking stem cuttings. Or, simply repot your ZZ plant into a bigger pot every other year.
Wondering how to repot your houseplant? Take a look at our repotting guide. It has all the information you’ll need!

About ZZ Plant
The ZZ Plant, also known as Zanzibar Gem, is a super easy-care plant. Its long, thick, stems stand tall and strong; with beautiful oval leaves set in deep green.
Originating from Eastern Africa the Zanzibar Gem evolved to survive extended periods of droughts followed by flash floods meaning it’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t want too much fuss when it comes to watering. This is the perfect gift for him and for her!
Zamioculcas are a great gift for any novice indoor gardener due it’s hardy, (almost) unkillable nature. We think this house plant is a particularly great gift for men. If you have a friend or family member who needs a plant for their office, home, or university room, why not treat them to a ZZ plant?
Read our full ZZ Plant Care Guide for those in need of a little guidance, but you really shouldn’t have to worry too much with this houseplant. For further reading, you could check out the RHS’s guide to caring for ZZ Plants here.
