How To Care For Bird of Paradise Plant
Water your Bird of Paradise when the top half of the soil has dried out. You can purchase a soil & light tester to check when your plant needs hydrating. Don’t allow your Strelitzia to sit in water to avoid the onset of root rot.
Strelitzias love the sun, so place it in the brightest room in the house. Don’t let it stand in a cold, drafty place as this plant is not cold tolerant. It’s also good to wipe the leaves of any dust monthly to let your Bird of Paradise plant bask in all the sunlight it can.
Bird of Paradise plants thrive in bright, moist environments with good air circulation. To maintain a high level of moisture, mist the leaves from time to time to hydrate the leaves with a water mister.
This plant likes rich and well-draining soil. Consider adding a natural houseplant fertiliser and horticultural grit to your potting medium for an extra happy plant.
You can use houseplant feed once a month. But switch to a product high in potassium (like Poinsettia or Tomato-labelled Feed) when the plant is in bloom to prolong the duration of the flowers.

Check this houseplants cubbyholes occasionally for spider mites and mealybugs, scale, thrips and vine weevils. If you find any pests consider using an organic insecticide like neem oil.

About Bird of Paradise Plant
The beautiful Bird of Paradise plant originates from South Africa. An elegant houseplant with large, broad, waxy leaves resembling the banana plant (giving it the nickname ‘Wild Banana’).
The Bird of Paradise plant can grow to huge heights, making it a real showpiece in your home. This exotic houseplant loves a warm, humid environment – so, choose a spot where it isn’t going to suffer from cold drafts or changes in room temperature.
Strelitzia Nicolai are also effective at purifying your air! Due to its large leaves, this indoor plant can improve air quality, making your home a happier and healthier environment.
However, the bird of paradise plant is considered toxic. It is perfectly safe to keep in the home if not consumed. If you have a child, cat or dog which may eat the plant it would not be safe.
How to decorate with your Bird of Paradise plant
This plant works best on the floor due to its size. Choose the right size based on the size of your house and where you want it to live – you’re going to be the best judge of how big you want to go here. As a guide, 1m (for most people) is around hip height and 1.5m is a little under your head. It’s worth remembering that the leaves of the Strelitzia arch outwards so you may need a wider space than that of the pot.

- Find a brightly lit spot for your strelitzia and keep away from any cold draughts.
