In fact, just about any plant in a sealed jar makes a terrarium! The first terrarium was produced accidentally, in 1842, by a man named Nathaniel Bergshaw Ward. This happened when Ward left a Boston Fern cutting in a jar and, over time, it germinated and began to grow.
