What are the best indoor hanging plants?

Indoor hanging plants are a great way to get creative with your home decor. From adding hanging plants that climb down your stair bannisters, or trail from shelves on your walls – there’s always a way to breathe more life into your home.

It can be important to know the difference between hanging plants and climbing plants. Climbing plants are going to want to ‘hook’ themselves into crevices as they creep and crawl towards the light.

On the other hand, hanging plants will trail and fall freely from wherever they are placed. Either way, they’re both on our list of best indoor hanging plants!

In any case, you’ll want plenty of nooks and crannies in your home if you want to keep your hanging plants, trailing plants, and climbing plants happy and healthy!

How can I hang my plants indoors?

This is a great questions as there are several ways to do this. So, how can I hang my indoor hanging plants?

Firstly, many hanging plants (especially ones we sell) actually come with their own plastic hanging basket with a detachable hook.

This gives you the freedom to hook and hang your indoor plant directly onto something appropriate in your home or, detach the hook and place the plastic basket in a stylish ceramic pot

  • Secondly, you can opt to purchase a macramé hanger. These are woven hanging cradles, made from string or rope that will hold your indoor hanging plant comfortably while looking chic and stylish. They’re very often seen in ‘bohemian’ style decor and Scandi-inspired houses. We have three colours (beige, green, and black)

  • Thirdly, you can purchase ceramic pots with holes already integrated into their designs with ropes in tow.

There is no right or wrong way to hang your indoor plants (apart from maybe upside down), but find the way that suits your home and style the most and get creative with your indoor garden.

Where Can I Hang My plants Indoors?

So, your next question is probably where should I hang my indoor houseplants. Well, the good news is that Hanging plants are all typically hardy houseplants. They’re perfect for your house, home office, student digs, and/or workplace.

Hanging Plants are often not too fussy about indirect or bright light. As a general rule of thumb, always aim to have your hanging plants with trailing stems in moderate light.

If you’re looking for items or furniture to hang these houseplants on, you should definitely consider:

  • bookcase

  • shelf

  • wardrobe

  • chest of draws

  • filing cabinet

  • desks or tables

Next, have a think about how close your houseplant is going to want to be to a window. Most plants love a brightly lit room but like to be away from harsh sunlight.

You can find all of this information in our “light & location” sections of our product descriptions. These are available on all of our indoor hanging plants!

What Is The Best Soil For My Indoor Hanging Plants?

Choosing the correct soil for your indoor hanging plants can often be difficult. As a general rules of thumb, it is always wise to prioritise a heavier soil that will compact your roots and prevent them from falling out of your pot.

For any hanging planter, having some vermiculite and spare soil substrate is always handy! You can even use cactus compost for plants that are used to a little bit of sun!

Most hanging plants like their compost moist, so be sure never let your soil dry completely unless it is the winter months. Having a little bit of extra weight in your soil substrate will help secure any trailing stems.

Our Best Indoor Hanging Plants

English Ivy (Hedera Helix)

If you’re from the UK, you will have almost certainly seen English Ivy climbing trees in parks. As they are adapted to British weather, they perform best in a cool and humid environment.

Treat them to a misting and add cascading leaves to your home for some natural British authenticity. They love a dark corner!

Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron Scandens)

This stunning indoor plant has beautiful heart-shaped leaves which gently hang from tender stems. The Heartleaf Philodendron has 2 varieties, the second being the ‘Brazil’ variety which is variegated and has a distinctive yellow stripe running through its centre.

This is one of the best indoor hanging plants as it is one of our hardy plant varieties.

Devils Ivy (Epipremnum Aureum)

Devil’s Ivy is one of the most popular indoor climbing plants, due to its ‘unkillable’ nature and ferocious growing prowess. It can survive in low light conditions and is really low maintenance – a great choice if you’re new to indoor gardening.

From darkness to direct sun, the devil’s ivy will grow anywhere, unlike most houseplants!

String of Hearts (Ceropegia Woodii)

This indoor hanging plant has delicate long stems which trail beautifully from shelves or bookcases with leaves which resemble a turquoise turtle shell in the shape of a heart. A great choice for a bright, warm room. Available in a plastic hanging basket or a kokedama (moss ball). Be sure to give these indoor plants plenty of direct sunlight!

Satin Pothos (Scindapsus Pictus)

An interesting indoor trailing plant. Its leaves speckled with silver notes hang delicately from stems similar to the Heartleaf Philodendron. They pair well due to their similarities but contrast due to the difference in their leaves’ texture and colour. This is certainly one of the best indoor hanging plants you can buy today!

Marble Queen (Epipremnum Aureum)

This hanging plant is a distant cousin to Devils Ivy. With beautifully variegated leaves (different in colour and patterned) with a marble like pattern running through them. Add contrast to your other plants with this stunner. It really is the queen of all indoor hanging plants!

Neon Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

Yet another stunning variation of Devil’s Ivy. Neon Pothos has bright green, almost yellow, leaves which add a huge pop of colour to wherever they live. Also super easy to propagate and add contrast to other houseplants you may already have. These indoor plants are ideal for any room. Be sure to give it plenty of indirect sunlight.

Indoor Hanging Plant Bundle

And last but not least on our list is our Indoor Hanging Plant Set. Comprising of the Heartleaf Philodendron, Devils Ivy and Satin Pothos, it’s a great way to kickstart your indoor hanging plant collection. If you’re looking for a quick selection of hanging houseplants, then look no further!
