How to get of houseplant bugs & pests

Indoor houseplants can sometimes harbour plants and pests that, if not treated, can cause harm to the long-term health of your plant.

Does my plant have bugs?

If you’ve noticed small black flies or little creatures crawling over soil and branches or webs forming on your plants – you may have some unwelcome guests. The first thing you want to do is move your plant away from any others around it so they can’t spread to the others.

How do I get rid of them?

This can also be pretty simple. Most will just brush off or wash away. A very quick remedy is to pop them in the shower and let it run under the water – make sure you don’t inadvertently over-water your plant by mistake and don’t use a jet so powerful that it damages your plant.

You can also use a natural insecticide like neem oil or insecticidal soap spray. Neem oil helps by inhibiting the bugs ability to reproduce and is an effective way to deal with plant pests, without damaging your plant and also being safe for your children and pets.

Preventitive Measures

So you want to keep bugs and pests at bay, before they manage to make themselves comfortable in your home. One of the best ways to keep them away is by applying a fine grit over the top of your soil or a topping stone. This prevents the bugs from being able to lay their eggs directly into the soil where they breed and feed on the tasty roots of your plants which causes your plants to deteriorate.
